Labrador Retrievers

Having been a breeder in the 80’s and 90’s, we had lines from Shamrock Acres and Candlewoods. Those dogs were not only beautiful in conformation, but had the natural hunting/retrieving skills and that gentle, friendly lab demeanor. Now, years later, we are beginning our own West Wood Farms line and want our pups to be able to have proficiency in show, obedience, and hunting. As the Labrador Retriever continues its popularity, the American (field trial) Labrador and the English (conformation) Labrador have become even further apart. As a result, the heavier, stockier English lab may not keep up with, or demonstrate, the spirited retrieving skills of its “cousin.” Likewise, the American Labrador sometimes is so far from the AKC or Labrador Retriever Club standard of conformation that sometimes you might even question if it’s a purebred dog. The kennels we use share our common goal of selectively choosing Labrador Retrievers who can “do it all.” So, even though our future puppy homes may just want a great companion or a sport dog, they will have one that will live up to its name.
